Artwork > Travels in Paradox

In the midst of travel, the dualism modern people are confronted with are multiple and can vary from subject-object, self-other, mind-body, culture-nature, progress-tradition, reason-experience, masculine-feminine, map-territory, representation-represented, secular-sacred, ordered-chaotic, and mundane-extraordinary. These dualism shift and change depending on the places that are visited, as well as the history attached to the place. While travel can broaden our sense of self-identity, if can also confront us with the historical realities of a specific location.

Travels in Paradox examines that duality, in order understand the paradoxical shifts that exists for many travelers. The images while separate are seemingly benign, are placed within a diptych giving them power to confront the shifting perspectives that are present with each site visited. The initial paradox coming from the fact that the place visited serves as both a home to its citizens and destination to its visitors. This serves as the opening to examine more of the physical and psychological dualities that are presented during travel. The series is meant to confront the modern identity of tourist while speaking to the relationship between the authentic and the inter-operation of modern and postmodern approaches to each experience.
